David Snow - Evel Knievel Stunt Cycle, Sugarpuffs, DJ Koco and More!
What exactly do you do in the industry?
I am the co owner of The Fantastic Factory with my partner Steve Evans, we design create and manufacture games and gifts. My role is co inventing, marketing, finance, sales, contract work, forward planning, tea making and firefighting. Steve does all the nice bits, but he does it very well.
What trends do you see in toys or games that excite or worry you?
I see a lot of exciting things in games. Covid -19 whilst awful has seen more and more people playing games, which is a good thing. So what we have to work out is how we provide great experiences that deliver the three immortal words “lets play again”. This is the exciting part, so many more people playing across all different ages gives us much more scope to indulge the crazy, stupid, excellent (i’m biased) ideas we have.
What’s your workspace setup like?
I have been self-isolating for 12 years at home. I have just built a new office that doubles as a TV room for the kids, but really it’s a man cave. I can finally display all the toys I’ve amassed on my travels as well as our own products.
What is the most rewarding part of your job?
Walking into a Toyfair or shop and seeing our products in the flesh. Having spent the first 15 years of my career in the toy industry selling other people’s product it was amazing to walk into London Toyfair in 2014 and see our first ever game on the Paul Lamond stand, sadly is wasn’t there next year, it bombed, but that moment was a real buzz, the other rewarding part of the job, as we call it, is meeting up with friends, partners and new customers to share what we are doing in different places around the world.
What is the worst job you’ve ever had and what did you learn from it?
The worst job was working in a chicken factory packing class A chickens in boxes for restaurants. Not a highlight, but it paid well at the time. I learnt that I never want to work in a chicken factory. It was "fowl".
What was your favorite toy or game as a child?
My favourite question, it was and still is an Evel Knievel Stunt Cycle. The hours I would spend jumping that bike over matchbox cars was time well spent. I used to live next door to the matchbox factory so was always raiding the bins for cars they would throw out. Also at the time my sporting hero was (and still is) Motorcycle world champion Barry Sheene who big news at the time and sometimes Evel was really Barry.
When is the last time you laughed out loud? What caused it?
I like laughing a lot, I pretty much laugh every day. I am in a couple of whats app groups that never fail to amuse me. The last time I laughed out loud was this week my 11 year old daughter told me a joke that I can’t repeat on here, I will tell you the joke when I see you.
Do you have any kiddos?
Yep two girls 11 and 13 one of them, the dirty joke teller, you have seen before on the Alpha Zulu video.
What music are you listening to now?
Right now DJ Koco, one of the best dj’s on the planet. I am not sure he is human. Check him out on You Tube.
What’s your favorite cereal?
Sugarpuffs.
What do you want to be when you grow up?
I never want to grow up, it’s too much fun being stupid and I do it well I think... or so everyone keeps telling me.
What’s next?
Bloody hell who knows what the world will throw at us next, plan to continue to make great products but the dreams is to go to space. If you know anyone with a spare £250k let me know.
