On Friday, June 21st, we received an email from Mary Couzin.

 

“I just happened to glance at our Google analytics and there are 35 people viewing your March article right now. Then I look to see how many views in last day and it’s at almost 1,500 views…So…what’s happening?”

 

Mary wasn’t the only one. Our inboxes were flooded, phones buzzing, and people we hadn’t heard from in months were reaching out. All because of a toy—a simple, colorful bracelet. But not just any bracelet; this one is changing the game.

This was all just a few months ago when Sticki Rolls exploded on social media. Within 72 hours of launch, we racked up 7 million views on YouTube and over 10 million views across all channels. Hey, Chrissy! Thanks for coming to our events every year and congrats on your recent successes! You always seem to be in the center of the fun crowd. So, who in the toy and game industry do you have the most dirt on?

 

I thought you would never ask.  Just kidding, but I am sure I now have every reader at the edge of their seat!

 

You both license and self-publish games, what makes you crazy enough to do both? 

 

Landing a licensing deal with zero game design experience, on your first and only concept that had never been to market, is like striking gold in this industry.  Yet, that is exactly what happened with my first game, Friend or Faux, originally pitched at CHITAG back in 2017.  We left armed with feedback, knowledge, and a plan to do a Kickstarter.  Less than a year later, we had our final design, a successful Kickstarter, and a couple of interested companies, ultimately landing with Goliath.  I was bit by the inventor bug.  I created more games to pitch and quickly realized the odds of getting a game licensed are slim. My ego got the best of me and said, “time to do this ourselves!”  So, there I was now with just a smidgen of industry knowledge thinking, how hard can this be?  The answer?  Hard, very hard.   READ MORE...

The BBC will require all TV shows to hit 25% off-screen representation targets after spending double the amount it expected to spend on diverse content since 2021. With the first three years of its much-discussed creative diversity commitments having come to an end, the corporation said today that it will up representation by 5 percentage points in terms of ethnic diversity, disability and socioeconomic diversity...

 

After failing to agree on new carriage terms, Disney has removed Disney Channel and other cable networks including ESPN and local ABC stations from DirecTV, which has roughly 11.3 million subscribers. A previous agreement between the two US companies expired on Sunday, which was when the channels went dark.  Disney and DirecTV have been trading barbs throughout a standoff over carriage terms. 

US plans to scrap $800 de minimis limit. International delivery expert Parcelhero says the plans to axe the de minimis limit would have a big impact on UK exporters. US legislators are planning to scrap or make major changes to the $800 ‘de minimis’ limit, below which no taxes are paid on imports. The change is motivated by efforts to reduce ‘import sensitive’ products from China and stop drug smuggling. 

 

Directed Electronics becomes major Toys ‘R’ Us ANZ stakeholder. Directed Electronics Australia Pty Ltd has emerged as a substantial holder in Toys ‘R’ Us ANZ Limited, securing an 18.9% voting power through the acquisition of 28,571,430 ordinary shares on September 2, 2024, for a total consideration of $2,000,000.10. 

 

Publishers sue Florida, California book bans. Big state battles over books in libraries. A group that includes six book publishers and others has sued the state of Florida, and California has passed a Freedom to Read Act, in continuing state-level battles over book bans in schools and libraries. The Florida lawsuit, brought by Penguin Random House, Hachette Book Group, HarperCollins Publishers, Macmillan...

Social networks can’t be forced to filter content for kids, says judge. A federal judge issued a last-minute partial block on a Texas law that would require some large web services to identify minors and filter what they see online. Called HB 18 or the Securing Children Online Through Parental Empowerment (SCOPE) Act, it was signed into law last year and was set to take effect over the weekend on September 1st.

History and Nostalgia

Frenzy from Marx. Released in 1974 by Marx, Frenzy has all the attributes worthy of its name. Advertised as the “pinball balance game”, this game of skill challenges players to guide rolling balls down a series of rails and into scoring channels. The game is contained within a high-impact, styrene plastic case secured by two legs. Behind the plastic face, six plastic rails, six channels, and six metal balls await the player. 

 

Shaker Maker from Ideal. Released in 1971, Ideal’s Shaker Maker allowed children to create their own toy figures using a special powder called “Magic Mix.” The magic behind the mix was a form of plaster of Paris that was non-toxic, strong, and reasonably fast-drying. To create their masterpiece, children ages four and up added plain tap water to a packet of Magic Mix into a shaker fitted with a two-piece plastic mold.

Jazwares, Universal collab on ‘Wicked’ x Squishmallows. Squishmallows and Universal are collaborating on a new Squishmallows collection inspired by the cinematic event, “Wicked,” coming to theaters Nov. 22. Launching exclusively at Walmart this fall, Glinda and Elphaba will be available in ultra-soft, squishy 10-inch scales. 

Complexly and Creative Beast Studio today launched a new line of prehistoric elephant action figures inspired by weekly YouTube series PBS Eons with a BackerKit campaign. Pokémon master toy line moves to Jazwares in France. Jazwares has extended the Pokémon master toy manufacturing rights to include new direct distribution in France for AW25. As the master toy manufacturing partner for Pokémon, Jazwares has extended its agreement with The Pokémon Company Int'l, and as of July 2025, distribution of the master toy line will transition from Bandai in France to the local Jazwares team.

Funko, NFL team for customizable Pop! Yourself collectibles. Funko has announced a major brand expansion of its Pop! Yourself line, in partnership with the NFL. Tees and hoodies for Pop! Yourself figures will be available for all 32 NFL teams. The range includes a selection of gray and white V-neck shirts and hoodies with accessories (e.g., a football and foam finger) in NFL-branded packaging.

 

Sidemen card games 'Too Far' and 'Social Ladder' set for launch. Hot House Games, co-owned by the Sidemen, is set to launch two party card games targeted squarely at a Gen-Z audience. "Too Far" and "Social Ladder" will hit the shelves in October. The new games are based on the Sidemen's game shows that have already proven successful with their multi-million weekly viewing audience.

First trailer for A Minecraft Movie builds excitement. The teaser trailer has given Minecraft fans a glimpse at next year’s major live-action movie release. BBC Children’s and Education is partnering with long-time Horrible Histories producer Lion Television to launch a new spinoff comedy series called Horrible Science. In production now to launch next year on CBBC and BBC iPlayer, the new show is inspired by British writer Nick Arnold’s 28-title book series, which has sold more than four million copies throughout the UK. 

'Dead Boy Detectives' series killed off; 'Sonic 3,' 'Super/Man,' 'Agatha All Along' trailers; Biggest pirate network shut down; Late Paramount bidder drops out; '4 Kids Walk Into A Bank' adaptation. Showbiz Round-Up. Netflix has cancelled Dead Boy Detectives, according to Variety.  The only season of this series, based on a comic series by Neil Gaiman and Matt Wagner, started streaming on April 25, 2024.

Gulli has ordered French studio Watch Next Media’s 2D-animated series Wild Kat, which M6 Group and Super RTL helped to co-develop.

Evergreen publishing franchise Maisy is scurrying back onto the small screen in a new 2D-animated series called My Friend Maisy. Now in production, this first project to come out of Trustbridge Entertainment is a co-production with BBC Studios Kids & Family. Spirit Halloween will operate a record-breaking 1,525 brick-and-mortar stores this season, adding more than 400 locations to its 1,100-store footprint by the end of September. WB Games and Chinese developer NetEase will be sunsetting their free-to-play, immersive mobile game Harry Potter: Magic Awakened in major Western markets. While the game was removed from app stores in the Americas, Europe and Oceania territories this week, those who have already downloaded it will be able to continue playing until its servers officially shut down on October 29. 

Sony execs claim the company isn't creating enough original franchises. Sony, purveyor of original franchises like The Last of Us, Uncharted, Horizon, Killzone, Ratchet and Clank, LittleBigPlanet, Resistance, God of War, LocoRoco, and Astro Bot, feels it could be doing more to develop homegrown IP. 

The internet reacts to Sony's unprecedented unreleasing of Concord. Sony’s big hero shooter is shutting down just two weeks after it launched. If you hadn’t heard the big news of the day, Sony and developer Firewalk Studios are shutting down Concord, the not-Guardians of the Galaxy hero shooter that has been flopping hard since its launch on August 23. 

 

Zynga sells web3 game Sugartown to D20 Labs. Mobile publisher Zynga has wiped its hands of its web3 game, Sugartown. Over the weekend, it revealed it sold "all products and assets" of the title to web3 developer D20 Labs. Zynga first revealed Sugartown last year, joining several studios at the time (like Sega and Square Enix) in adopting web3 and blockchain for games. 

 

Tilting Point making layoffs that could impact 20 percent of global workforce. Mobile publisher Tilting Point is laying off 20 percent of its workforce to "continue operating a healthy ongoing company." Confirming the news in a statement sent to MobileGamer.biz, the company said the cuts were made in response to "tough" market conditions. 

 

Helldivers 2 and Dead Island 2 support studio Toadman Interactive confirms layoffs. The layoffs are expected to impact around 100 full-time and contract employees. Toadman Interactive, the studio known for developing original titles like Immortal Unchained and plying its trade as a work-for-hire developer, is making layoffs. 

 

'Sleep tight, Hopoo Games': Risk of Rain developer goes dark as key staffers join Valve. The studio has cancelled an upcoming project codenamed 'Snail.' Hopoo Games co-founders Paul Morse and Duncan Drummond have departed the Risk of Rain developer to join Valve. The studio broke the news in a post on X and revealed "many other talented [team] members" have also been hired by Valve. 

 

Rocksteady cuts staff following Suicide Squad's underperformance. Eurogamer reported layoffs at Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League studio Rocksteady. On Monday, the outlet said the developer's QA team was effectively cut in half from 33 staffers to 15. Other departments were affected, though at time of writing, the total number of redundancies is unclear. Junior and tenured staff were among those let go. 

 

Until Dawn remake developer Ballistic Moon confirms layoffs. The UK studio has spent years working on a 'rebuilt and enhanced' version of the horror title. Ballistic Moon has confirmed a number of employees have been laid off. In a statement posted on Linkedin, the company indicated it has struggled to navigate the "complex challenges" facing the game industry.

James Earl Jones died Sept. 9 at the age of 93 at his home in Dutchess County, New York, took on Shakespeare, the Greeks, Jean Genet and a hundred comedies, yet it’s the voiceover work that everyone’s talking about today. He is, after all, the man who said “This is CNN” and CNN was instantly and for decades classier, more distinguished for it. Today, or tomorrow, or any day, another hundred or thousand or million people will hear his voice once again, or maybe for the first time, as Mustafa in “The Lion King.”

There were, of course, a few other things for which Jones will be remembered....

 

Brian Trueman, the writer behind the cartoon series Danger Mouse, has died at the age of 92, his son has said.

Posting on Facebook, Jonathan Trueman said his Manchester-born father had died in hospital on Sunday evening after a short illness.

 Trueman had an illustrious career in television and radio, presenting the BBC children's quiz show Screen Test as well as working at Granada TV.

 But he was best known for his work with animation company Cosgrove Hall Films - particularly Danger Mouse, which started in 1981 and was voiced by Sir David Jason, as well as Count Duckula and Chorlton and the Wheelies.

He described him as "clever, funny, resilient, an absolute gentleman, loving and loved". "We will all miss him so much," he added.

Leonard Riggio. Barnes & Noble and GameStop founder Leonard Riggio passed away on Tuesday after a battle with Alzheimer’s disease, the family announced.  The retail pioneer was 83.

Riggio built Barnes & Noble up over half a century, opening his first college bookstore in Greenwich Village in 1965 and acquiring rival Manhattan store Barnes & Noble in 1971.  B&N bought B. Dalton Bookseller, a mall chain, in 1987, and began a strategy of opening superstores, which included cafes and large newsstand offerings.  The growth of the chain was accompanied by a decline in the number of independent bookstores, who found it difficult to compete with B&N’s size and selection.

B&N continued to expand until the store count peaked at 726 for the fiscal year ended January 2009.  But Amazon’s emergence on the retail scene in 1995 and the growth of digital content took their toll, leading to a challenging sales environment through the teens.  But it was during that period that Barnes & Noble expanded its selection of manga, graphic novels, and hobby games, dramatically impacting sales in those categories.

Riggio was a pioneer of retailing beyond Barnes & Noble.  He also founded Barnes & Noble College Bookstores, a contract operator of college stores across the U.S., Software, Etc., and in 1999, GameStop, which grew to over 7000 stores worldwide.

Through the teens, Riggio was in and out as Barnes & Noble CEO multiple times in a period when the company had at least five CEOs.  He came back one last time to oversee the sale of the chain to Waterstones parent Elliott Management Corporation in 2019  ensuring that the company would be run by a bookseller.
