People of Play (POP) is excited to announce that Shannon Swindle, a respected leader in the toy and game industry, has joined the organization as the new Director of People of Play. Shannon brings a wealth of experience, knowledge, and passion for the industry, making her an invaluable addition to the team.
In her previous role as Inventor Relations Manager for Games at Moose Toys, Shannon played a pivotal role in helping grow the company’s Games division by building strong relationships within the inventor community. Her work on licensing 18 games over the past two years, including award-winning products, such as Pickleball Blast, has solidified her reputation as a creative force and trusted collaborator in the toy and game world.

Lego Wins Trademark Battle Against Hyderabad-Based Candy Company Leo Foods. In a notable win for the iconic Danish toy manufacturer Lego, the Madras High Court has ruled in its favour in a trademark dispute against Hyderabad-based Leo Foods. The dispute arose over Leo Foods' use of a mark strikingly similar to Lego's on its candy products, which the toy giant claimed infringed upon its renowned brand identity.

Most of the toys sold in the U.S. are manufactured in China, and companies are worried they could get a lump of coal next year — in the form of steep import taxes promised by President-elect Donald Trump.
TikTok Faces U.S. Ban After Losing Bid to Overturn New Law. The law will ban the video app in the United States by Jan. 19 if its owner, ByteDance, does not sell it to a non-Chinese company. TikTok is one step closer to disappearing in the United States after a panel of federal judges on Friday unanimously upheld a new law that could lead to the banning of the popular Chinese-owned video app by mid-January.
British Columbia’s Supreme Court has permitted a class-action lawsuit to proceed against Electronic Arts (EA) for serving up loot boxes in its video games. For the uninitiated, loot boxes are virtual mystery packages that players can buy in a game world using purchased premium funds or in-game currency obtained through gameplay.

Australia to force tech giants to keep paying for news. Australia's government says it will create new rules to force big tech companies to pay local publishers for news. The long-awaited decision sets out a successor to a world-first law that Australia passed in 2021, which was designed to make giants like Meta and Google pay for hosting news on their platforms.

Matchbox 1983… A New Beginning Catalogue. In 1953, Lesney Products released a set of 1:64 scale die-cast cars that were an immediate success and became the company’s first 1-75 Matchbox series. BBC Studios and The Walt Disney Company have announced the first-ever animated feature film for Bluey, the beloved Emmy and BAFTA Award-winning animated series that is 2024’s No. 1 series on streaming. The new deal sees Disney acquiring the global theatrical rights for the film, which will land in cinemas in 2027 under the Disney banner. Following the global theatrical release, it will stream on Disney+.
Sam Richardson, the Emmy-winning comedian known for his work on Veep and Ted Lasso, is joining John Cena in Matchbox, Apple Original Films' live-action take on the classic Mattel car toy line. PLAY-DOH, 'Star Wars' announce collaboration with launch of playsets. PLAY-DOH has unveiled two new playsets featuring characters from the Star Wars franchise, including the Mandalorian, Grogu, Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader. The new collaboration features The Mandalorian Launching Speeder Playset, which includes The Mandalorian and Grogu figures, tools to create gear and ammo, and a launchable speeder.

Evil Genius adds 'Return of the Living Dead' to licensed games roster. Evil Genius Games, which publishes RPGs under its Everyday Heroes system, has licensed Return of the Living Dead for its next Cinematic Adventure, the companies announced. The new volume, spearheaded by game designer Nick Lowe, will feature new rules and mechanics tailored to the property and four short adventures in the movie universe.
Warner Bros. reaches new deal with Comcast for TV channels. Warner Bros. Discovery Inc. reached an early renewal of an agreement to provide networks such as TNT and CNN to Comcast Corp.’s roughly 12.8 million cable-TV customers. The deal avoids the channel blackouts that can sometimes come with fee negotiations and includes continued carriage of all of the Warner Bros. networks.

Free League plans new volumes for its Lord of the Rings games. The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences has announced the shortlist for its third-annual Children’s & Family Emmy Awards, which recognizes creativity and innovation in kids entertainment. Among the major streamers, Apple TV+ and Disney+ tied for the most nods this year at eight apiece, followed by Netflix and Nickelodeon with five and Max with four.
The Game Awards were stacked with even more big reveals than we expected this year. We were expecting some major reveals during this year's 10th anniversary of The Game Awards and sure enough, Geoff pulled through with a stacked lineup of announcements—some of which even we weren't anticipating. Alton Thacker, a Utah man who co-founded a nonprofit that has donated over 1.7 million wooden toy cars to children around the world, has died. He was 89.
Thacker, who is being remembered as someone who brought "joy to countless children" as the founder of Tiny Tim's Foundation for Kids, died peacefully of natural causes while surrounded by family on Tuesday, Nov. 26 at his home in West Jordan, according to an obituary.
Those who knew Thacker spoke with local NBC affiliate KSL-TV about his impact, with one friend at the Tiny Tim Foundation describing him as "probably the greatest man I ever met aside from my father-in-law."
Mike Gull. The larger than life media figure, who passed away recently, was known and loved by many people in the toy community, largely through his time at GMTV. Posting on LinkedIn at the end of last week, Mike’s long term friend and colleague Simon Poole recounted the sad news: “It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our chairman, colleague, and dear friend, Mike Gull, on Friday evening, 15th November. Mike (Gully) was an extraordinary individual who dedicated over 40 years to the industry. His leadership, wisdom and unwavering commitment left an indelible mark on our business and all who had the privilege of working alongside him.
Matilde Brualdi Clementoni, died at her home in Recanati at the age of 93.
The team at family owned Italian business, Clementoni, has been devastated by the passing of co- founder, Matilde, and has issued the following statement: “Last week in her home in Recanati, at the age of 93, Matilde Brualdi Clementoni, honorary president of Clementoni S.p.A. and co-founder with her husband Mario of the company in 1963, passed away. Matilde left us a special soul, the soul that gave life to this great enterprise of ours.”
Originally from Pesaro, Matilde had moved to Recanati to give life to an entrepreneurial project that has now become a successful reality of international calibre. Since the dawn of Clementoni, Matilde has been able to impress her incomparable character on the entire company organisation. The business was left, at the end of the 90s, to her four children, still at the helm of the company today.
Amber Cook passed away unexpectedly on October 25, 2024. Cook was a key player within the games industry, mostly working behind-the-scenes on the branding and business development of dozens of games and projects. She is well-known for her work at Looney Labs, Asmodee Group, and Roll20. Cook was also admired for the roles she played in the re-launch of Free RPG Day, as a founding member of the American Tabletop Awards, as the fundraising co-chair for Rose Gauntlet Foundation, and in the rebranding of her partner Paul Alexander Butler's store Games and Stuff...
